Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

The print media plays a vital role in raising awareness and shaping public discourse on critical issues such as climate change. In Nigeria, where the effects of climate change are increasingly evident through desertification, erratic rainfall, and flooding, the media is expected to educate the public and influence policy decisions (Oladipo & Musa, 2023). Wamakko Local Government in Sokoto State, situated within the semi-arid region of Nigeria, is particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, including loss of arable land and water scarcity. Despite the urgency of these challenges, the extent to which the print media prioritizes and frames climate change issues remains underexplored (Ahmed & Abdullahi, 2024). Previous research indicates that media coverage often lacks depth and is influenced by factors such as limited resources, editorial biases, and inadequate access to expert knowledge (Yusuf & Garba, 2025). This study examines the patterns, depth, and frequency of print media coverage of climate change issues in Wamakko, aiming to assess the effectiveness of media in driving awareness and action.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While climate change poses significant risks to the socio-economic development of Wamakko Local Government, print media coverage of these issues has been criticized for its inconsistency and superficiality (Abubakar & Musa, 2023). Reports often focus on isolated events such as floods or droughts without adequately linking them to broader climate change trends, leaving the public ill-informed about the underlying causes and potential solutions (Bello & Ibrahim, 2024). Additionally, the absence of sustained media campaigns and expert-driven narratives limits the ability of print media to influence policy and behavioral change effectively. This research addresses the gap by assessing the quality and quantity of print media coverage of climate change issues in Wamakko, with the aim of providing actionable insights for improvement.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To analyze the frequency and framing of climate change issues in print media coverage in Wamakko Local Government.

2. To evaluate the depth and accuracy of climate change reporting in local print media.

3. To recommend strategies for improving print media coverage of climate change issues in Wamakko.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How frequently do print media in Wamakko cover climate change issues?

2. What is the quality and framing of climate change reporting in local print media?

3. What strategies can enhance the effectiveness of print media in covering climate change issues in Wamakko?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Climate change issues receive inadequate coverage in print media in Wamakko.

2. The framing of climate change issues in local print media lacks depth and context.

3. Capacity-building initiatives for journalists improve the quality of climate change reporting.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study underscores the critical role of print media in promoting awareness and action on climate change in Wamakko Local Government. By identifying gaps in current coverage, the research provides valuable recommendations for media practitioners, policymakers, and environmental advocates. It highlights the need for a more proactive and informed media approach to climate change, contributing to the broader effort of addressing environmental challenges in Nigeria.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on print media coverage of climate change issues in Wamakko Local Government, Sokoto State. It does not include other media formats or areas outside Wamakko.
